SECTION 10426 – SPECIALTY SIGNS

PART 1 GENERAL

1.01 SECTION INCLUDES

  1. Signage

1.02 SUBMITTAL

  1. Manufacturers must submit 3 references showing products for projects completed within the last 6 years.
  2. Submit manufacturer’s technical data and installation for each type of sign required.
  3. Submit shop drawings listing sign size, letterform and letter heights.
  4. Submit one full size sample sign of type, style and color specified, including method of attachment. If approved, the sample will become part of the job.

1.03 SIGN TYPE DESCRIPTION

  1. Signage shall consist of room number and roomfunction to meet the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act – 1990 (ADA) and CABO/ANSI A117.1 – 1992.

PART 2 PRODUCTS

2.01 MANUFACTURER

  1. Provide products from Mohawk Sign Systems,Inc.® P.O. Box 966, Schenectady, NY 12301-0966.
    (518) 842-5303 or FAX (518) 842-5306 or approved equal. Other manufacturers must submit their signage products to the Architect 10 days prior to the bid date for approval to be considered as an equal.

2.02 GRAPHIC PROCESS

  1. All signs shall be manufactured using Graphic Process Series 200A – Sand Carved® using Format D.
    1. Tactile characters shall be raised the required 1/32" inches from sign face. Glue-on letters or etched backgrounds are not acceptable.
    2. All text shall be accompanied by Grade 2 braille. Braille shall be separated 1/2" from the corresponding raised characters or symbols. Grade 2 braille translation to be provided by signage manufacturer.
    3. Perimeter borders shall be 3/8". (optional)
    4. All letters, numbers and/or symbols shall contrast with their background, either light characters on a dark background or dark characters on a light background. Characters and background shall have a non-glare finish.
  2. Plaque material shall be melamine plastic laminate, approximately 1/8" thick with contrasting core color. The melamine shall be non-static, fire-retardant and self-extinguishing. The plastic laminate will be impervious to most acids, alkalies, alcohol, solvents, abrasives and boiling water.
  3. Letterform shall be [Gill Sans upper case or other san serif or simple serif letterforms].
  4. Size of letters and numbers shall be as follows:
    1. Room numbers shall be 1".
    2. Lettering for room ID signs shall be 3/4".
    3. Symbol size shall be 4".
    4. Standard Grade 2 braille shall be 1/2" below copy.
  5. Copy position: [CC (centered/centered) or as indicated on drawings].

2.03 SIGN SIZE

  1. Room function signs, 2" x [length] as required.
  2. Classroom signs, will be design [M-310-A with one window or M-310-B with two windows where required]. Window inserts by owner. Sign size, 6" x 6".
  3. Restroom signs shall be design [ADA-4] size [8" x 8"] with a 4" accessibility symbol, gender symbol and the verbal description placed directly below followed by Grade 2 braille.
  4. Corners: [1/2" radius] (optional)
  5. See typical sign layouts on drawings.

2.04 EXTERIOR WALL SIGNS (At Exterior Front Doors)

  1. Design: [M203-9] [Black] [duranodic aluminum frame] sign, size [9" x 9"].
  2. Insert [material], [ES Plastic], [color] as selected.
  3. Insert [shall contain a 4" accessibility symbol] [with the verbal description, “Entrance”] [using 1" Gill Sans upper case letters directly below] followed by Grade 2 braille.

2.05 MOUNTING

  1. Signs shall be mounted using vinyl tape for interior signs and concealed holes and screws for the exterior frame sign. The signs shall be mounted [60" from the floor to the center of the sign on the latch side]. The distance between the door frame and sign should be [2"]. Installer/user assume responsibility for suitable installation of the signs.
